Omurwa to wait longer for Portuguese topflight debut

Kenyan international Johnstone Omurwa will have to wait longer to make his debut in the Portuguese topflight, the Primeira Liga.

The former Wazito FC defender was an unused substitute as Estrela da Amadora lost by a solitary goal to Victoria Guimares courtesy of Jota Silva‘s on Sunday night during the season opener.

Omurwa and Estrela earned promotion to the top flight through the playoffs, returning to the Primeira Liga after a 14-year absence.

Estrela finished third in the second tier and had to square it out with Maritimo in the playoffs where they won on post-match penalties after playing to a 3-3 draw across the two legs of the match to return to the first division after 14 years.

The club is a reincarnation of the original Clube de Futebol Estrela da Amadora which went under in 2011 due to financial problems that rendered them bankrupt, before returning in 2020 following the merger between Clube Desportivo Estrela and Club Sintra Football, the latter then playing in the third division.

They were promoted to the second tier the same season after finishing second and spent two seasons in the second division before their recent promotion.

In their first campaign in the Primeira Liga 2, Estrela finished 14th but had a better outing last season as they earned promotion.

Up next for Estrela is a trip to face Benfica on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Alfred Scriven featured full minutes in Norway as Hodd fell 2-1 to Bryne, with another Kenyan Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma unused in Elfsborg’s 1-0 loss to Hammarby.
