Former Harambee Stars head coach, Stanley Okumbi, has turned down an offer from Mathare United to be their special technical advisor.
The announcement of his appointment alongside Collins Omondi, the newly appointed head coach, was made by the cash-strapped former champions on Monday.
The club’s statement indicated that the duo’s primary task would be to steer the team out of the relegation zone in their remaining eight matches.
“Mathare United are proud to confirm the appointment of Collins Omondi and Stanley Okumbi as both head coach and special technical advisor respectively until the end of the 2022/23 season,” the statement read in part.
While Okumbi agreed that Mathare United had expressed interest in his services, he clarified that they had not entered into any agreement, and the matter had not been deliberated to conclusion.
The former head coach further stated that he was unavailable for the role as he had other commitments.
“I’m reading about it on social media. We have not entered into any agreement with Mathare United. Besides, I’m not available for the job because I have several other commitments at the moment,” Okumbi told the Star.
He had been assigned by the Football Kenya Federation to prepare the Kenya U-18 team for the upcoming Cecafa Championships, and was currently scouting for talent across the country.
Collins Omondi, who is also known as Korea in local football circles, has taken up his new role at Mathare United. He presided over his first training session on Friday and has been preparing the team for his first match in charge against Gor Mahia on Wednesday.
This will be Omondi’s second head coaching job in the KPL, following his tenure with Nzoia Sugar in the 2019/20 season.
He has also guided Nairobi Stima in the National Super League and was at some point an assistant coach at Kariobangi Sharks and Posta Rangers.
