Kenyan Star Marjolen Nekesa propels Slavia Prague into UEFA Women’s Champions League Group Stage

In a scintillating UEFA Women’s Champions League encounter, Slavia Prague demonstrated their dominance by delivering an impressive 6-0 victory over Olimpia Cluj from Romania on Wednesday evening.

The win secured their place in the prestigious group stage of the competition, and it was Kenyan international Marjolen Nekesa who shone brightly as she opened the scoring in style.

Slavia Prague’s victory was an encore of their successful journey through the second round of the Champions League. Their resounding performance not only thrilled the fans but also marked their triumphant return to the coveted group stage.

Nekesa, along with Morávková, McLaughlin, Šurnovská, Stackpole, and Khýrová, orchestrated the emphatic win.

Slavia Prague, having carried a five-goal advantage from their previous home fixture, didn’t take anything for granted. They approached the game with the same intensity and determination. Right from the early minutes, they pressed the opposition, with Gabriela Šlajsová‘s cross testing the Cluj goalkeeper by hitting the crossbar.

However, it was in the 10th minute that the Nightingales’ faithful had their first cause for celebration. A precision corner kick from Michelle Xiao led to a swift finish by Marjolen Nekesa at the edge of the small goal area, giving her team the opening goal.

After securing the lead, Slavia Prague continued to control the game, creating numerous opportunities. The first half concluded with Tamara Nečasová‘s clinical play, extending the lead to 2-0 with a ground projectile.

The second half witnessed Slavia Prague adding more goals to their tally. Molly McLaughlin‘s header found the back of the net, while Martina Šurnovská effortlessly scored the fourth goal after a cross from substitute Petra Divišová.

The fifth goal came just minutes later, as Molly McLaughlin capitalized on a deflected shot. The icing on the cake was provided by Michaela Khýrová, who sealed the 6-0 win with a goal from Gabriela Šlajsová‘s cross.

With this commanding victory, Slavia Prague earned their well-deserved place in the Champions League group stage. The excitement now mounts as the draw for their upcoming opponents is scheduled for Friday 20 October in Nyon.
