Jowie Irungu killed Monica Kimani, Court Orders

Judge Grace Nzioka said Jowie stole an identity, armed himself with a gun, and wore a coat, then entered and killed Monica Kimani.

“All this evidence leads to the strong conclusion that Irungu killed Monica Kimani,” the Judge said.

“The Court has confirmed the charges beyond doubt.”

In delivering the verdict on Friday, Judge Grace Nzioka said the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence and had reached its limit.

“The person who killed the deceased did not intend to give her even a minute to survive. It is my opinion and finding that the perpetrator intended immediate death,” Judge Grace Nzioka said.

Nzioka said the first accused had ‘knowledge of how to kill’.

Judge Grace Nzioka said Jowie knew Monica Kimani before her death.

The Judge said this emerged because the first accused’s claim was that he did not know the deceased before her death.

“It is the decision of this court that the first accused’s claim that he did not know the deceased before her death is not acceptable, untrue, and future thoughts and lies,” Judge Grace Nzioka said.

“The court finds that the first accused was known to the deceased because they were together at the Kenya Polytechnic University. They were in the same class studying the same course.”

Monica’s body was found in her Lamuria Gardens apartment located on Kitale Lane near Denis Pritt Road, Kilimani.

Jowie and Jacque Maribe have been in court since 2018, with the prosecution calling 35 witnesses. The defense did not call any witnesses.

The Court also said there was corroborated evidence about the clothes Jowie Irungu wore when Monica Kimani was killed.

Corroborated evidence is evidence that strengthens or confirms existing evidence.

Evidence from witness Pamela shows that when Jowie was leaving home, he was wearing a white shirt with patterns, an orange-colored cap, and a brown jacket.

“My conclusion is that there is strong evidence about the clothes Jowie was wearing on that date,” Nzioka said.

In her ruling, Nzioka also said that Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu was in Monica Kimani’s house when she was killed.

The Judge said there was sufficient evidence that Jowie was the last person seen with Monica in her Lamuria Gardens apartment.

Jowie had reached Monica’s place using someone else’s identity.

“It is the result of this court that the first accused was in the deceased’s house on the date of the incident and was the last person seen with the deceased, the testimony of security guard Harun, who identified him in the parade. As the first accused left the house at 11:00 PM, and no one else went to that house,” she said.

The two have been in court since 2018, with the prosecution calling 35 witnesses. The defense did not call any witnesses.
