Bundi Karau: Top 2002 KCSE Student who Currently Holds 4 Degrees, a PhD

Bundi Karau was one of the few individuals who achieved the highest score in the Form Four national exams.

He completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2002 and received a high enough score to pursue a career in medicine.

Karau said that he did not fare well in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), hence he did not attend a top secondary school.

He was admitted to Kanyakine Boys’ High School in North Imenti, where he earned a name for himself with his outstanding performance.

“While in school I knew my competition was in Starehe and other top schools. I was working hard to qualify for a degree in medicine,” he said.

Because of his great achievement, Karau was accepted into the University of Nairobi to study a Bachelor of Science degree from 2004 to 2010.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in medicine as well as a bachelor’s degree in surgery from the University of Nairobi.

The doctor enrolled in UoN’s Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine program in 2014 and graduated in 2017. His scholarly objectives were not limited to a master’s degree.

Karau began his Doctor of Philosophy in Human Anatomy program in 2020, and he will finish in September 2023.

“This journey seemed insurmountable 3 years ago when I set out. It almost seemed dumbfounding that I would do this. But there’s nothing determination and focus can’t achieve. It pays to start and keep moving in small steps,” he noted.

Karau is one of the few top candidates who have chosen to continue their education in the country following their outstanding achievement.

As he expanded his knowledge in the classroom, he took on several jobs in the field to gather experience.

Karau worked as a medical practitioner for the Ministry of Medical Services from 2011 to 2023 and as a senior house officer at the University of Nairobi from 2014 to 2023.

Since 2018, he has served as a senior lecturer and honorary Consultant Physician at Kenya Methodist University and Meru Teaching and Referral Hospitals.
