YY Comedian recently shared his journey to fame on the Mic Cheque podcast. The comedian born, Oliver Otieno, revealed the challenges he faced in convincing his extended family of his comedy career.
Leaving home under the guise of a village visit, YY moved to Mathare with a friend. For six months, he traveled from Mathare to Carnivore for Churchill Show auditions without landing any TV spots.
Back home, his extended family worried about his lack of traditional employment. “They called me offering life advice,” YY recalled. One person who played a crucial role in YY Comedians path to success was his critic uncle, who sarcastically questioned his talent, even mocking him during Churchill Show airings. The situation peaked when YY’s uncle accused him of being a thief with a limited future, prompting YY to leave the house.
On his way back to Mathare, YY texted his aunt, hoping his uncle would live to see his success. “I am just praying that he lives long enough to see me become a millionaire,” YY expressed.
YY’s big break came with appearances on Churchill Raw, leading to a spot on the main show. Reflecting on his journey, YY credited his mother for her unwavering support despite facing criticism from family.
“My mother has always been my rock,” YY said emotionally. “She’s the reason I kept pushing, despite the odds.”
