Taai Odero: Doctor Who Quit Medical Career Now Running Thriving Tours and Travel Company

Many Kenyans regard a career in medicine as one of the most respectable achievements, but Taii Odero believes that having the freedom to pursue one’s own interest is the pinnacle of success.

He revealed that despite having a medical degree, he had to resist cultural pressures to pursue his passion of fitness and travel.

Odero mentioned that his love was tours, and he had a natural urge to develop and grow his own business.

“I wanted to be self-employed and I also wanted to create employment for other people. After I graduated, I worked for three years and I resigned,” he said.

He claimed that after leaving his wealthy position, he has spent six years in fitness and travel, running a company called Authentic Fitness and Adventure.

Odero stated that in such a short period of time, he has grown his company and now earns Ksh 800,000 each month.

“Medicine pays a lot, yes, but there is something called passion. If career and passion do not move in one direction, then it means you are in the wrong field

“Nowadays people do not look for money, let the money look for you. When you look for money, it will not come. I cannot compare medicine to what I do because I earn a lot from it,” he said.

Odero has over 30 employees in his Nairobi-based company and has successfully navigated the hurdles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020.

“I have people who are working in my company and I have to have a float of around Ksh 500,000 every month to make sure all the bills are paid

“Profits average between Ksh 800,000 to Ksh 1 million. That is for the low season,” he stated.

Odero stated that his hospitality-related business suffered greatly, to the point that it went months without profit.

To cope, the corporation had to sit down with its employees and explain the situation, as well as develop new business models to maximize digital revenue.

Odero acknowledged that his organization does not own gyms, but rather outsources teachers to other locations across the country.

He mentioned that the company has spread so extensively that there is an instructor in practically every place. The travel arm of the company owns between 10 and 15 automobiles.

Odero revealed that his decision to forego medicine in favor of fitness irritated some of his family members, who have failed to accept his decisions despite his high salary.

“Even my mum, she does not understand what I do to date because for her she knows that medicine is the only key that can help you to be successful in life. This is the challenge I give to any parents out there, please do not limit your child’s passion,” he said.
