Kenya Airways (KQ) has achieved a significant milestone by launching its first direct flight from Nairobi to London Gatwick. This flight is piloted by Captain Irene Koki Mutungi and Captain Cathleen Kangethe. The historic flight, which began at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), is the first to connect Nairobi directly to Gatwick, London’s second-largest airport.
This expansion is part of KQ’s effort to improve connectivity between Kenya and the United Kingdom, a key market for tourism and trade. The new route is expected to greatly increase tourist arrivals from the UK. In 2023, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) reported that the UK was the third-largest source of visitors, contributing over 180,000 travelers. The direct flight to Gatwick may boost arrivals by at least 15% in its first year, making it easier for southern England tourists and others to visit Kenya.
This route provides better access to Kenya’s diverse attractions, from wildlife safaris to coastal experiences, enhancing the country’s tourism appeal. It also opens up avenues for business travel and cargo services, positioning Kenya as a central hub in Africa for both leisure and commercial aviation.
Captain Koki Mutungi and Captain Kangethe’s leadership on this landmark flight also represents the increasing presence of women in aviation and highlights KQ’s dedication to gender diversity in the industry.
The Nairobi to Gatwick route will operate four times a week, giving travelers more options and strengthening ties between Kenya and the UK. As tourism picks up after the pandemic, this route is expected to play a key role in boosting visitation and economic growth.
