King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom are set to embark on a state visit to Kenya, beginning on October 31, 2023.
The visit, which will span four days, celebrates the warm relationship between the two nations and the strong and dynamic partnership they continue to cultivate.
This state visit marks King Charles III’s first visit to a Commonwealth country as King, making it a significant occasion for both the UK and Kenya. Notably, Kenya holds a special place in the royal family’s history, as it was the country in which King Charles’ late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, began her reign as queen in February 1952.
According to a press release from the UK government, the royals’ itinerary will encompass visits to several regions in Kenya, reflecting the collaborative efforts of the two countries.
Their agenda includes bolstering mutual prosperity, addressing climate change, promoting youth opportunities and employment, advancing sustainable development, and fostering a more stable and secure region.
During their stay, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will engage in various activities and meet with key figures, including President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto, government and United Nations representatives, select CEOs, religious leaders, youth, and Kenyan Marines who train with the UK Royal Marines.
They will also participate in an event celebrating the life and work of the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, alongside Wangari’s daughter, Wanjira Mathai.
Upon their arrival in Kenya, the royal couple will be warmly welcomed with a ceremonial greeting before attending bilateral meetings at State House. A state banquet will follow at the same venue to celebrate the occasion.
Subsequently, King Charles III will visit UN offices, including UN Habitat and the UN Environment Program.
He will also attend a technology showcase and meet with Kenyan entrepreneurs. A reception with Kenyan youth will focus on discussions related to trade, development, media, creative arts, and environmental conservation.
The royals’ itinerary includes a visit to a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, where they will join British and Kenyan military personnel in an act of Remembrance.
They will also learn about the Commission’s recent efforts to commemorate all those who supported Britain’s endeavors during both World Wars.
Moreover, the royal couple will tour Nairobi National Park to witness the essential conservation work conducted by the Kenya Wildlife Service, which plays a significant role in Kenya’s thriving tourism industry.
As Captain General of the Royal Marines, King Charles III will visit Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa.
There, they will witness Kenyan Marines, trained by the Royal Marines, conducting a covert beach landing, demonstrating the collaboration in defense action.
Queen Camilla, as Patron of the Equine Welfare Charity Brooke, will meet with the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals to rescue donkeys at risk and promote their welfare.
She will also meet survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, sharing her insights from working in this field.
The visit will conclude with a meeting with faith leaders from Mombasa’s diverse community, where the King will hear about their efforts to promote harmony among the city’s population.
Notably, this marks King Charles III’s first visit to Kenya as king, having previously toured the country in 1971, 1978, and 1987. The upcoming state visit promises to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Kenya.
