Mt Elgon Member of Parliament, Fred Kapondi, narrowly survived a shooting incident during a violent encounter with assailants in Bungoma town on the evening of Thursday, August 10.
Addressing the press on Friday, the MP recounted the chilling sequence of events, alleging that he noticed his life was in danger after withdrawing money from a bank to shop for his family.
Kapondi claimed that the suspected thugs shot at the window adjacent to the driver’s seat after parking his car near the supermarket.
Luckily enough, the MP had already alighted and had just entered the store. Perplexed by the incident, the lawmaker argued that he may have been specifically targeted in the alleged assassination incident, given that he was in possession of the car at the time.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker described the incident as unusual given that he had never had any runnings with thugs previously.
“I already recorded my statement with the police. They (thugs) have damaged my car, but I am happy to be alive.
“The police will establish what happened even as I do my own investigations,” the MP stated, adding that the alarming incident left him surprised and shaken.
Moreover, Kapondi divulged that the thugs broke into his car upon realising that he was not inside and escaped with the MP’s valuables.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after vigilant onlookers raised the alarm.
Preliminary reports indicated that the legislator lost over Ksh200,000 cash in the Thursday evening incident.
Police assessed the crime scene, cordoned it off from onlookers and dusted the car for fingerprints and other crucial pieces of evidence that would aid them in solving the case.
Francis Kooli, the Bungoma County police boss, confirmed the incident and disclosed that top-ranking detectives were already assigned to the case.
Police, he stated, were yet to recover any cartridges from the crime scene but had established that the MP was trailed after leaving the bank by a car yet to be tracked and impounded.
“Before they could go any further, a crowd noticed their activities and raised alarm prompting them to fleed the scene,” Kooli stated.
