Officer Who Lost Forearms During Tuesday’s Finance Bill Protests Speaks

Chief Inspector David Karuri Maina, who lost both arms when a tear gas canister burst in his hands has spoken about the event.

Speaking to the press from his hospital bed in Nairobi West Hospital, the officer expressed sadness and how the incident had ruined his life.

Maina admitted that he would be unable to do many of the activities he did before losing both forearms.

“It was a sad day that this happened as we were keeping calm in Nairobi. This one has changed my life a lot because there are so many things that I will not be able to do as I was doing

“I don’t know what I will tell my kids about this, I know they will be very shocked,” he said.

Maina spoke after Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei paid him a visit in the hospital.

The CS stated that his visit demonstrated the profound impact of the recent protests on both the individuals affected and the larger community.

“My visit highlights the profound impact of the recent unrest on both the individuals involved and the broader community, underscoring the need for tolerance, unity and resilience in challenging times,” the CS said.

Mutua has earlier pledged to give Ksh 1 million to the police officer, adding that he will contribute the money together with Governor Ole Ntuntu.

“My friend, Governor Ole Ntuntu, and I are contributing one million to help the young man whose life has been ruined, so it can at least cushion him. I hope others will contribute a little to change his life,” he said.
