The recent protests in Kisumu County by supporters of Azimio la Umoja have resulted in the tragic death of a Maseno University student, William Mayange. The incident has left his mother, Eveline Miruka, heartbroken and calling for justice.

Speaking to the media, Ms Miruka expressed her disbelief and pain over her son’s death. She claimed that her son was not guilty of any crime and that the police were wrong in shooting him dead.

“They told me that my son was in hospital receiving treatment but when I rushed there I was shocked when I was told that he died on the spot and his body was in the morgue,” Ms Miruka said.

“Mtoto wangu alikuwa kijana smart na alikuwa university… ona sasa vile wamemfanya mtoto wangu, haki ona vile anakaa,” Ms Miruka said.

Ms Miruka described her son as a smart young man who was studying at the university. She also recounted the last time she spoke to him, just hours before he was killed.

She had delivered some things to him at the university gate and they had agreed to meet later that evening. Little did she know that it would be the last time she would see her son alive.

The police have claimed that a group of students had invaded a supermarket in Maseno town and other businesses along Kisumu-Busia road during the protests.

They also alleged that the protesters had lit bonfires and barricaded the road. The police report further stated that the students had started pelting stones at the police line, causing damage to window panes and other properties.
