Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), has callef for the immediate arrest of the second police officer involved in the shocking assault and shooting of a face mask vendor during protests in the capital on Tuesday.
In footage that has circulated widely, two anti-riot police officers can be seen cornering the unarmed young man on Moi Avenue, brutally attacking him before one officer fires at him from close range. This disturbing incident took place during demonstrations demanding justice for the slain protester, Albert Ojwang’.
While the National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of the officer who pulled the trigger, Ms. Odhiambo insists that his partner should also be held accountable for his part in the attack.
“It’s not just about the shooter—his colleague was right there too. He’s an accessory because you can see them pushing the victim and then fleeing together,” she stated in an interview with Spice FM on Wednesday. “They are both involved and must face the consequences.”
The LSK president also urged the NPS to publicly reveal the name of the arrested officer, arguing that the public has already identified him online.
“I’m eager to see the statement where they name that specific police officer. The public has already figured out who he is, and his family is being called out,” she added.
Additionally, Ms. Odhiambo called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to issue an official statement outlining the actions taken in response to this incident.
The protests on Tuesday, primarily led by young Kenyans demanding accountability for police brutality, turned chaotic after some criminal elements reportedly infiltrated the peaceful march. Protesters are also calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who is under investigation in connection with Ojwang’s death.
According to Health Director-General Patrick Amoth, the shooting victim was quickly taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he received emergency neurosurgery.
This incident has ignited a wave of public outrage, leading to increasing demands for transparency, justice, and an end to unlawful police behavior.
