This acquisition comes barely three years after the businessman was jailed in Uganda over fraudulent gold dealings and handed a six-year jail term.

Lual alongside two others were arraigned in the Ugandan Anti-Corruption court where they were found guilty of obtaining $1 million through false pretenses.

The three were charged with fraud in March 2019 following a complaint filed by an Ethiopian national identified as Wegnew Desire.

Court documents showed that between February 2017 and December 2018 at different places in Kampala, Lual and his accomplices obtained the money from the businessman purporting that they were selling him 150kg of gold, which was never delivered.

In the deal, Lual offered himself as a license holder for the gold trade while his other accomplice was the seller.

He had passed off to gold dealers as a son of a general in South Sudan during his dealings with other foreign businessmen said to have lost millions in the fraud.

It still remains unclear how Lual managed to get out of prison but Monitor Uganda reported that the Judiciary was investigating a senior court clerk who helped him secure his freedom.

Jane Apio is accused of generating a fake release judgment order for Malong in January 2023.

Another report showed that Henry Twinomuhwezi, a registrar who signed the release order had been punished and demoted to a lower court.
