Why comedian Elsa Majimbo will never wear diamonds, designer labels despite wealth and fame

In today’s celebrity world where extravagant spending is the norm, comedian Elsa Majimbo stands out as a true exception. Elsa, who is recognized as one of the world’s wealthiest celebrities, is making headlines not just for her comedic talent but for her prudent financial habits.

Despite having lots of wealth, Elsa believes that there’s no need in spending money on what is unnecessary. In 2022, she faced criticism for attending the Ebony magazine gala in what many considered a “cheap” dress. The long black dress, which left her stomach bare, cost just $18 (Sh2,000).

Addressing the backlash via her TikTok account, Elsa explained her decision. “I wore this dress to a gala the other night and got questions from the magazine,” she said. “I was asked whose design I was wearing. The dress cost $18 (Sh2,000) and I wore it because it was cheap and cute. I think it is absolutely crazy to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a dress for one night.”

Elsa stressed on the importance of spending wisely and warned her followers against careless financial habits. “Don’t spend money just because you have it. I don’t think anyone should prove anything to anyone,” Elsa advised. “I choose to be cheap, and I like it because I make money and I keep my money.”

Elsa Majimbo rise to fame

Elsa’s rise to fame began with her viral videos, which caught the attention of global icons such as Rihanna, leading to her becoming one of the models for the Fenty makeup line. She made headlines again in July when she bought a house in Los Angeles as a 21st birthday present for herself.

In a series of TikTok videos, Elsa has also shared a list of three items she refuses to buy, regardless of her wealth:

Diamonds

Elsa Majimbo refuses to wear diamonds due to her ethical concerns, particularly fuelled by the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. “I know what’s going on in Congo because my home country Kenya is so close to Congo. I never wear diamonds. I’ve worn them a few times, but after some time, I felt it was not for me, so I vowed never to wear diamonds again,” she said.

Private Jets

While Elsa remains open to re-evaluating this in the future, she considers private jets an unnecessary extravagance. “I’m not sure if it’s a rule or I can’t afford it yet, or we’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” she said.

Birkin Bags

Elsa believes spending $50,000 (Sh6,650,000) on a bag is unreasonable. She advised that the money should be invested in something more substantial, such as a house deposit. “I just think it is silly to spend that much money on a bag,” she said.
