Billionaire Chris Kirubi’s son-in-law, Andrew Musangi, was on Tuesday, July 4, shortlisted for the position of Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) chairperson.
The lawyer, who served as the chairman of the Jubilee Party National Elections Board, emerges as a strong contender among the six selected by the Public Service Commission.
Musangi currently serves as the chairman of the Public Procurement Oversight Authority board- a position he was appointed to by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021.
Also included in the list were former MPs Abdikadir Omar (Balambala) and Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi).
The duo were members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party and Raila’s point men in Garissa and Taita Taveta counties, respectively.
Former Principal Secretary for East African Affairs John Kochellah, former Water principal secretary, James Lopoyetum, and James Gituro Wahome wrapped up the list.
The six will face the interview panel on Wednesday, July 12, between 9 am to 3 pm.
Consequently, the Commission called on Kenyans who hold reservations against the six candidates to submit their views promptly.
“Members of the public are invited to avail any credible information of interest relating to any of the shortlisted candidates (through sworn affidavits) to the Secretary/CEO, Public Service Commission, 4th floor Commission House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi or online through [email protected] so as to be received on or before July 10, 2023,” read the statement in part.
The position of CBK chairperson was declared vacant following the departure of Mohammed Nyaoga.
Nyaoga exited CBK alongside former governor Patrick Njoroge and his deputy Sheila M’Mbijjewe.
Former Treasury PS Kamau Thugge replaced Njoroge as Susan Koech replaced M’Mbijjewe. Both of them were nominated by President William Ruto and approved by Parliament.
The CBK chairperson is tasked with leading a team of 11 to oversee monetary policy formulation.
