Carol Waithera: Kenyan Lawyer Who Went From Washing Dishes to Owning a Restaurant in Germany

Carol Waithera, a trained lawyer in Kenya, left the country in 2006 with a German man she met and later married, as her life took an interesting turn.

She was met with culture shock, especially the language barrier that prevented her from practicing law.

In a past interview with Chams Media, Waithera narrated her journey from Kenya and adjusted to life in Germany for over 15 years.

“Back in Kenya I loved cooking whenever we had parties at home everyone knew Carol was cooking. I never knew I would take it up as a job,” she said.

Waithera started Restaurant La[Kula] in 2017 to offer Kenyan delicacies to locals.

She learned the ropes from chefs at her previous job and later pursued a three-year certification course.

Waithera explained that the restaurant’s name was intentionally written in an artistic style to encourage visitors to eat together.

“I open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Throughout the days we have a lot of different cuisines and on Sunday we have Nairobi brunch comprising of dishes eaten in Kenya during breakfast,” she said.

The restaurant which is located in Schermbeck can accommodate around 100 people inside and about 300 outside in the garden.

Additionally, it has a few rooms to accommodate visitors who may want to stay the night.

“The cooking is unique, I don’t want you to just eat the food I want you to feel the love, I will dance and laugh with you and you will always remember me,” she said in interview with Chams Media.

Over the years, her restaurant has grown massively, and she wants to start a podcast on those living abroad.
