Vanessa Kiuna: Kathy Kiuna’s Daughter Who Rose From Working as Bartender to Working for Australian Government

While Kathy Kiuna is well-known as a fiery preacher, one of their daughters, Vanessa Kovac, is quite the opposite.

Vanessa spoke on Woman Without Limits in 2017 about her life in Australia, where she moved at the age of 17 to study law at the highly regarded Murdoch University.

Revisiting the first time she left the country, she stated that things were not too difficult for her and that she was grateful for her newfound independence and the opportunity to pursue her life away from her parents’ shadow.

“Being on my own helped me mature, first and foremost, out of the public glare and away from everyone else. I believe that was the best thing you did for me because I became very strong and independent,” she said.

According to her Linkedin profile, Vanessa worked as a bartender and server at Modo Mio in Australia from September 2013 to December 2015 while still a student.

At the time, her responsibilities included greeting clients at the bar, mixing and serving beverages to bar and restaurant patrons and producing unique cocktails for special events.

Vanessa was also responsible for keeping guests entertained while waiting tables, as well as opening and shutting the bar and conducting cashier tasks.

She was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in November 2015, immediately following the completion of her Graduate Diploma in Law at the Australian National University.

Vanessa returned to school in 2016 and earned a master’s degree in law, which she finished in 2018.

She then worked as a legislation officer for Western Australia’s Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries.

Vanessa is currently employed as a Senior Project Officer and Inspector with the Government of Western Australia’s Finance Department, where she has been for more than a year.

Kathy commended her as someone who has always been strong and fiercely independent, preferring to craft her own life story rather than being told what to do or given things.

Vanessa echoed her mother’s comments, insisting that she never wanted anyone to take credit for what she had accomplished except herself and God.

She also noted that she has never been interested in following her parents’ footsteps, despite cultural pressure.

“I’m a pastor’s kid, not a pastor. I did not choose this life. I appreciate all my parents do more than you can imagine, and I thank God that I was raised in a specific way, but we are all free to make our own mistakes and decisions. I’ve chosen a completely different path,” she said.
