Millicent Jepkorir, popularly known as Marakwet Daughter, has taken a stand against Kenyan DJs for what she perceives as exploitation of her musical work.
The singer, whose hit song “Mali Safi Chito” has garnered significant attention, voiced her concerns in an interview with TUKO.co.ke, where she expressed discontent over DJs uploading her song to their YouTube channels without her consent.
According to her, DJs leveraging her song on YouTube platforms without proper authorization constitutes a violation of her intellectual property rights and deprives her of potential revenue.
“DJs heshimu kazi yangu, you are not allowed kuupload my music in your YouTube channel. Unajua chenye nilipitia ndo nikarecord hiyo wimbo? I have the rights, I own the rights it is registered. Do not upload my work on your YouTube channel. Piga sherehe, tumia song, furahia…pata ya event but not YouTube,” she said.
In her impassioned statement, Marakwet Daughter emphasized that while DJs are free to include her song in their mixes for clubs or events, they should refrain from uploading it to YouTube without obtaining the necessary permissions.
This comes days after Chito found herself in the midst of a social media storm following a TikTok video where she addressed alleged trolls among her followers.
The artist warned those spreading negativity and proudly declared her peace of mind after blocking several individuals.
“You are used to using bad language on my comment section. Mumezoea sanaa kupupuu inbox yangu pale TikTok, pupuu sasa hapa. Nkt!” she lashed out at her followers.
The controversial video quickly went viral, sparking varied reactions from social media users.
