Trevor Ombija: From Matatu Conductor to One of Kenya’s Most Sought After News Anchor

Known for his work on Citizen and Ramogi TV, Trevor Ombija has established himself as one of Kenya’s best prime-time news anchors.

His outstanding proficiency in both Dholuo and English, along with his outstanding interviewing abilities, set him apart as one of the nation’s top multilingual journalists.

Although his calm manner of breaking the news suggested a smooth ascent to the top, Trevor’s path was everything but typical.

In an interview, he talked about his modest upbringing prior to joining the media. He revealed that he used to work in Nyakach, Kisumu, as a conductor for matatus, or minibuses.

“I used to be a matatu conductor in that area (Nyakach) for a long time. Stopping at the bus stage and interacting with boda boda operators and matatu drivers is natural for me because I was one of them,” he said.

Trevor’s career in the media started when he graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in journalism and media studies.

He started out as a Junior Assignment Desk Editor at the China Central Television Africa Bureau, which is currently referred to as CGTN.

Trevor stayed in this post until July 2013, at which point he moved to Nation FM and got a job as a radio news anchor.

His career trajectory continued to rise when, in August 2014, he joined NTV, where he worked as an associate producer and news anchor until 2018.

Trevor began working with Royal Media Services in 2018, and he is currently based.

He has taken on important duties at Royal Media, such as anchoring the Monday 9 PM newscast dubbed, Monday Report.

In addition, Trevor is a well-known morning show host on Day Break and one of Ramogi TV’s faces.

In 2020, he received the Head of State Commendation (HSC) award from President Uhuru Kenyatta in appreciation of his exceptional contributions to the media sector.
