Traffickers Arrested as Police Seize Ksh 12 Million Worth of Drugs in Malindi

The Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) Malindi arrested two suspected traffickers and seized over 429kg of bhang on Saturday, Jue 8.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects, a driver and his turnboy, were apprehended with drugs estimated to have a street value of Ksh 12 million.

In the operation along the Mariakani-Mavueni road, the officers responded to a tip-off that a Mercedes-Benz Actros was transporting drugs.

Officers swiftly followed leads to the truck, ambushing the suspects at an open field while preparing to load seven sacks of bhang.

The 28-year-old driver identified as Joseph Nzomo and his accomplice Auress Godfrey, 27, were arrested and escorted to a waiting police car along with the seized narcotics.

Following the arrest, the two were escorted to Mariakani Police Station where the truck was also detained fo further questioning.

“Traffickers and peddlers are being warned to shun the illicit trade and consider venturing in other lawful income generating projects, before the long arm of the law catches up with them and puts them away in prison,” DCI warned in a statement on X.

In April, one person was arrested following a police chase that led to the seizure of suspected marijuana valued at Ksh 37 million.

DCI detectives together with officers from Genoso police station trailed a convoy of four vehicles along the Migori-Kisii highway at around 11 PM.

“The occupants on realising they were being trailed, the driver of motor vehicle Toyota Probox sped off that prompted officers to make a chase and fired two rounds of 9mm to deflate the tyres

“The driver abandoned the said motor vehicle and fled to [an] unknown destination with injuries since blood stains were spotted inside the driver seat,” a report showed

The other occupant Joseph Nisa Ouma, 39, was arrested and was found in possession of Ksh 30,000 of different denominations believed to be proceeds of the crime.

The two matatus were also abandoned by their drivers and were towed to Genoso police station.

A search conducted in the impounded cars led to the recovery of fifty sacks “containing brooms of green dry plant material suspected to be bhang of approximate street value of Ksh 37.5 million”.
