Pedophile Serving Life in Prison Escapes from Nakuru Hospital

Police in Nakuru have launched a manhunt for man who was serving a life sentence at the Nakuru GK Prison and escaped under mysterious circumstances.

According to reports, Stanley Cheruiyot, 29, escaped while awaiting corrective arm surgery at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital.

The convict who had dislocated his elbow was admitted to the hospital’s male orthopaedic ward ahead of the surgery that was slated for later this week.

According to Samuel Waweru who is a Medical Superintendent at the facility, preliminary investigations indicated that Cheruiyot escaped through the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus which borders the hospital.

He added that after escape, only one handcuff, which was attached to his arm was found on the scene further raising questions.

“The orthopaedic ward is next to the fence of the KMTC so he escaped through the KMTC. He had two handcuffs but only one was found; the one that was attached to the arms. One of the handcuffs was attached to the arm and another to the bed,” Waweru said.

On how Cheruiyot managed to escape from the hospital undetected, Waweru said it remains unclear, however, noting that he might have faked going to the washroom.

“Maybe he went to the toilet, I don’t know the circumstances under which he escaped because usually they are supposed to be escorted to the toilet by the wardens,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi said they are in hot pursuit of the convict and they are working round the clock to bring him back.

In December 2023, drama unfolded at Naivasha Sub-county Hospital after an inmate who had been brought in for treatment from Naivasha Medium prison escaped in unclear circumstances.

According to reports, the inmate who has been remanded in prison for the last one year for defilement escaped from one of the toilets in the facility.

“He managed to escape through a window in the toilet and by the time the warders realized what had happened, he was nowhere to be seen,” a witness identified as Simon Mwai said.

Following the incident, the Superintendent in charge of the hospital confirmed the incident noting that the relevant authorities had taken over the matter.

“The suspect had just been brought to the hospital for treatment but he managed to escape from the toilet in unclear circumstances,” Dr Bernard Warui said.
