Shatta Bway: From Tout, Selling Handbags to One of Kenya’s Top TV Hosts

Stephen Jacob Maunda alias Shatta Bway is a renowned media personality currently working at Cape Media’s TV47 and Radio47.

He is the son of Jacob William Maunda, a prominent radio personality who has worked for Voice of Kenya and Musyi FM. Shatta Bway is the eighth child born in a family of nine.

Shatta Bway received his elementary schooling in Nairobi but had to shift schools when his family moved to Kibwezi.

He finished his secondary school at Darajani High School.

Growing up in a polygamous family had numerous problems, including inadequate resources, which forced them to fend for themselves at a young age.

Shatta, who was unable to attend college due to financial constraints, opted to take on menial occupations to supplement his income.

He began by selling handbags and providing barber services before transitioning to hawking at the country bus terminal.

Shatta Bway utilized the money he earned from touting to enroll in a journalism course; while enrolled, he received voice-over gigs and the opportunity to appear in plays at the theatre.

While recording voice-overs and plays, his friends encouraged him to record a radio demo, which he shared with Radio Citizen in the hopes of receiving rapid response, but this was not the case.

Shatta opted to investigate other opportunities after receiving no feedback from Radio Citizen.

Three years after sending the demo, he received a call from Radio Citizen, who offered him a job hosting the Waks Tiki Taka show.

He worked at Royal Media Services for nearly 5 years before moving on to other responsibilities, including appearances on Citizen TV series like 10 nearly 10 and as a panelist on the morning discussion show.

Shatta announced his departure from Radio Citizen in March 2024 to join Cape Media, the parent company of Radio 47 and TV 47.
