School Closed after Police open Fire at Students

Litein Boys’ High School based in Kericho County was closed indefinitely on Monday, May 15, following protests over the change of entertainment schedule.

A senior police officer at Bureti sub-county police headquarters who spoke to the press pointed out that officers were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the irate students who had jammed the administration block and laboratories.

As a result of the unrest, window panes of the laboratories and administration block were destroyed as well as the biometric registration kits.

Further, the students burnt down a motorcycle while at the same time wrecked a private vehicle within the institution.

Reports indicated that the students protested a move by the administration to change the entertainment timetable from Sunday evening to the afternoon.

The school’s management, which held a crisis meeting, had not issued a statement at the time of publishing this article.

At the same time, Kipsuter Boys High School, Bomet County students went on the rampage following the transfer of their principal Loussuku Mussa.

According to Phanton Analo, Chepalungu sub-county police commander, the aggrieved students marched to the county headquarters to present their petition.

They, however, disrupt the normal school operations.

The police commander indicated that the students questioned a directive to send 184 students home over school fees arrears.

“The school has a total of 524 students out of which 184 had been sent home over school fees arrears. Six others were in the institution, but did not take part in the strike,” he stated.
