Samburu County Assembly Speaker Fred Lengees on Tuesday announced his resignation after landing a new job with the United Nations.
Lengees will, in the coming days, take up the new position with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security as a Senior Field Security Officer based in Juba, South Sudan.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Lengees noted that the decision to resign as County Assembly Speaker, a position he held for only eight months, was not an easy one further noting that he needed convincing from his colleagues.
“It wasn’t an easy decision to make. I’ve been working well with my Governor and other county officials and they convinced me to take it up. I had no problems here so nobody should intimate that I’m leaving because of political differences,” he said.
While wishing Lengees all the best in his new role, Samburu County Governor Jonathan Leleliit opined that the UN job is, on paper, more important than serving as a regional speaker.
“We held deliberations and decided that he should accept the new job. In his new post, Lengees can do a lot for the people of Samburu and Kenyans in general. We feared that if he passed it up, no other Kenyan would land the gig,” said the Governor.
With Lengees’ resignation, Samburu County will now move to elect a new Assembly Speaker.
