A fed-up Robert Matano has dared Tusker FC to fire him immediately after the club made it clear that he has to beat Gor Mahia on Sunday to retain his job.
On Wednesday, club chairman Charles Gacheru gave the veteran tactician an ultimatum that he had to beat the defending league champions on Sunday lest he be jobless after the final whistle of the game.
The ultimatum resulted from what has been an inconsistent start to the new season by the Brewers. Six matches in, they have two wins, two draws, and two defeats. The loss to Shabana last time out appeared to have triggered the Brewers’ hierarchy.
The Lion, as he is famously referred to, has now answered back at his boss, urging him to dismiss him before Sunday if he so wishes.
“This is Robert Matano; I’m Robert Matano. This is Robert Matano. I don’t succumb to threats,” the three-time league winner told Nairobi News.
An irritated Matano added that he could decide to walk out of the Ruaraka-based club before the Gor Mahia duel.
“I don’t work with ultimatums; I don’t fear being sacked. He can do it even now. What will he do to me if I decide to leave before Sunday?” he posed.
The tactician went ahead to lift the lid on the problems that he has faced for the last two years at the club.
“After winning the league in 2021, I was given a six-month contract. At the start of last season, I was given a two-month contract with the reason that my performance was being assessed again. This season, I’m being given ultimatums again.”.
He added that he doesn’t understand why he is being threatened with a sack six matches into the new campaign.
“The league has just started, and it is a marathon. Why am I being threatened? I can even decide to leave because I’m not in that category of people who work under threat. Matano has left Tusker before, and even if it happens this time, it wouldn’t be strange.”.
This is Matano’s second stint as Tusker coach. He won the league with the Brewers in 2012 before he was sacked months later. He returned to the club and won the league in 2021 and 2022, although the 2022 one was later annulled by FKF after they were reinstated as the season was run by the Caretaker Committee.
