Purity Mbae: Kenyan Entrepreneur Who is a Top Dairy Goat Farmer in Uganda

Purity Mbae was born in Kenya and received her education at local institutions before attending the University of Nairobi.

Upon graduating, she relocated to Uganda with her husband, where she initially took on the role of a community worker.

In response to her children’s lactose intolerance, Purity began raising goats at home to provide a source of milk.

She acquired three goats—two females and one male—and soon found that the milk produced by the two females surpassed their family’s requirements.

“We had a lot of milk and we didn’t know what to do with it, so we asked out neighbours if they wanted milk and they were so excited,” she said.

At that point, the demand for goat milk began to surge, leading them to identify a potential business opportunity.

The entrepreneur elaborated that, similar to other enterprises, they encountered difficulties, including the loss of a portion of their herd.

Purity remarked that she lost her goats due to her absence from the farm, relying solely on communication with the farm workers.

“You get the reports, but the reports that you want to hear are not those that you want to know. Telephone farming is never a way to go, it doesn’t work. I’m one of the testimonies, I saw it go down,” she said.

Following the loss, the goat farmer resigned from her position and chose to dedicate herself entirely to the care of the dairy goats.

“I had to choose between continuing getting a salary or putting all my energies of goat farming. It was a matter of risking it all,” Purity said.

Purity observed that her decision to enter the dairy goat farming sector was primarily influenced by the rapid return on investment it offers.

“When you invest in diary goat farming, when you sell the byproducts daily, within three months you’ll have recovered your capital

“They’re quite sensitive to small issues, abrupt changes of the environment, too much sun and issues of worm infestation,” she said.

Purity has enhanced the value of the goat milk produced on her farm by packaging and marketing Nutrifit milk and Nutrifit yoghurt.
