Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has upgraded the Madaraka Express, introducing premium class coaches to its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service between Nairobi and Mombasa. The move aims to enhance the travel experience with improved comfort, luxury, and convenience.
In a statement, KRC hailed the premium service as a “game-changer,” noting that it raises passenger standards in terms of efficiency, safety, and security. “We are revitalizing and transforming the passenger experience to exceptional standards,” the corporation said.
The upgrade was officially launched by Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, during a ceremony in Nairobi. The premium class tickets are priced at 12,000 Kenyan shillings (approximately 93 U.S. dollars) for adults, while children aged 3 to 11 will be charged around 46.5 dollars.
The introduction of premium class coaches follows a significant increase in the SGR’s passenger traffic, which rose to 2.73 million in 2023, up from 2.39 million the previous year. This surge reflects the growing appeal of the service, valued for its reliability, convenience, and affordability
