Phone thief arrested in Mombasa turns out to be Turkana DCI officer

Detectives in Mombasa are holding their colleague for allegedly stealing a mobile phone worth Sh25,000 from a resident during Mashujaa Day celebrations last week.

The DCI, who is posted in Turkana County, allegedly snatched a Samsung Galaxy A31 mobile phone worth Sh25,000 from Ms Rebbeca Muindi in the Coast region.

Ms Muindi said she received a call while buying fruits from a vendor along Nkrumah Road in Mombasa town at 9am on Friday, but when she went to answer the call, the phone was suddenly snatched by a speeding tuk-tuk driver.

According to the police report, the driver of the said tuk-tuk was identified as a DCI officer.

The report adds that as the officer was about to drive off towards Treasury Square, the fruit vendor who was attending to Ms Muindi hung on to the tuk-tuk, demanding that the driver return the phone.

“But when the vendor refused to get off the tuk-tuk, the officer threatened to stab him, forcing the vendor to jump off the tuk-tuk. The driver then started driving back and forth, trying to run over the vendor,” reads a police report filed at Central Police Station.

Unfortunately for the phone thief, a group of police officers on their way to the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park for the Mashujaa Day celebrations witnessed the incident and quickly boarded a Ministry of Water pickup and led the tuk-tuk on a chase.

“The suspect was arrested and officers escorted the tuk-tuk and Mazima to Central Police Station. Upon interrogation, the suspect was found to be wearing a police badge and identified himself as a police officer attached to DCI Kibish in Turkana County,” the police report added.
