Patrick Kinyanjui leads team to glory at KCB Series in Limuru

The four-ball of Patrick Kinyanjui, Lawrence Njenga, Nicholas Gathuru and Wallace Mwaura returned a combined score of 110 points to emerge as the overall team winners of the tenth leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour at the 18-hole Limuru Golf Course on Saturday.

The quartet beat their closest challengers Renaldo D’Souza, Rozita D’Souza, Hassan Ileli, and Kuziva Murigo who returned 107 points to clinch the second position at the tourney that was graced by 234 golfers.

Speaking after their victory, an ecstatic Kinyanjui said: “Our foru-ball plays morning golf on Mondays, Wednesdays and sometimes Saturdays. When choosing the team, we were looking for long-hitters, good-iron players, and great-putter Wallace Mwaura. What we will continue doing is what we do best – playing together, looking at our strengths and working on our weaknesses.”

Handicap 18 golfer Mutahi Muriithi carded an excellent 45 stableford points to be crowned the overall winner beating Geoffrey Githinji who plays off handicap 21 who returned 41 points to be named the men’s winner.

Nayams Kariuki,  handicap 41,  carded 37 points to beat all her opponents and emerge as the lady winner of the day. Sean Lyomu on the other hand, who plays off handicap 21 clinched the junior winner award after returning 39 points.

In the highly competitive staff category, David Kitheka, a handicap 21 golfer, returned 35 stableford points to claim it while long-hitting Ibrahim Lande (Handicap 16) returned 30 points to emerge as the runner-up.

“With KCB’s regional reach, it would be amazing to host the grand finale in Rwanda, Uganda or Tanzania – something different because we have seen all the courses in Kenya. Kenya has grown tremendously in the last five years in terms of golf and we would like to see the same growth exhibited in other countries,” added Kinyanjui.

Kelvin Wangongu was awarded the longest drive award in the men’s category while Laureen Gibson clinched it in the women’s category. Handicap 18 Willy Metto returned 39 points to win the guest winner award.

The Bank hosted a juniors’ golf clinic on Sunday and a tree planting exercise at the club – in  a bid to embed sustainability at the heart of the regional golf series.
