Nuru Okanga Arrested, to Spend 5 Days in Police Custody

Nuru Okanga, a top supporter of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), will spend five days in police custody for statements he made on social media.

Okang’a was apprehended on Tuesday, June 11, during an operation at his house in Kayole.

He was later hauled to DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning after being accused of running suspicious accounts with posts deemed harmful to the state.

Other posts, which are considered threatening and may lead to disruptions affecting peace, order and public safety, were published on a number of accounts associated with the suspect.

Okang’a is also being investigated for cyber harassment, which violates the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

While appearing at Milimani Law Courts, the judge ordered that he be detained at the Muthaiga police station so that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) could conclude its investigations.

In November 2023, Okanga was charged before a Nairobi court with publishing information on YouTube insulting President William Ruto.

He was accused that on November 20, 2023, at an unknown place within the country, jointly with others not before the court, used YouTube Account/Channel RIBA NEWS @ribanews to publish the alleged information.

The prosecution said he published abusive information knowing it to be false and calculated to discredit the reputation of a state officer and with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

The accused appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina and denied the charges.

Okanga pleaded for lenient bond terms through his lawyer stating that he was a student who is supposed to join form one next year, despite being a parent and sole breadwinner of his family.

The magistrate released him on a cash bail of Ksh 10,000.
