Njugush reveals why he doesn’t regret starting a matatu business months after investing Sh8m in the new ‘Tugi’ matatu”

Popular comedian Timothy Kimani, famously known as Njugush recently ventured into the matatu industry.

A month ago, he unveiled his 36-seater matatu, named after his firstborn son, Tugi, marking a significant step in his entrepreneurial journey.

The matatu, featuring a luxurious interior, is registered with the Super Metro Sacco and services the bustling Rongai route.

Njugush shared with a local media outlet that the inspiration to enter the matatu business came from a training session he attended, which emphasized transforming liabilities into business assets.

With an idea to sell his car already in mind, the training provided the final push he needed.

“The greatest inspiration came from a training I attended a few months ago. They were talking about how we could convert liabilities into business, and because I had the idea of selling my car, it was the right decision,” he explained.

Reflecting on his past, Njugush mentioned how observing individuals starting as makangas (conductors) and eventually becoming drivers reinforced his belief that success can come from any hustle.

This perspective, coupled with his practical experience, led him to explore the matatu industry, a sector known for its vibrancy and profitability.

To fund his new business, Njugush sold his well-maintained 2014 Toyota Prado TX, a decision humorously influenced by his friend Abel Mutua, who nicknamed the car a “wardrobe.”

The proceeds from the sale, combined with additional funds, covered the over Sh8 million required for the new matatu, which includes sophisticated arts, screens, and interior features beyond the base cost of Sh6.4 million.

One month into operation, Njugush reports that the matatu is performing well and meeting all its expenses while generating a profit.

The vehicle’s success extends beyond the daily commute; it is also hired for events outside Nairobi during weekends, further boosting its performance.

“It is doing well, and I’m happy I took that step. It has been well received and is performing admirably in terms of customer satisfaction,” Njugush said, noting that the best feedback will come after a year.

Looking ahead, Njugush hinted at potential expansion plans, expressing his desire to add more matatus to his fleet.
