Nimrod Taabu: Inspiring Story of Citizen TV Anchor Who Was Rejected Thrice By Utalii College

Nimrod Taabu is considered one of the top Swahili journalists and news anchors in the country.

However, his journey to the top was not easy.

In a previous interview, he revealed that after graduating from high school, he applied to Utalii College, a well-known hospitality college in the country, but was rejected three times.

Nimrod also attempted to pursue football professionally, but it did not bear fruit.

He returned to the village, where a cousin suggested him to submit an application at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC).

“I returned to the farm and spent almost a year working with my father before a relative recommended me to apply to a Mass Communication school, which I did, and the rest is history,” he explained.

Nimrod completed his journalism course at KIMC and went to work as an assistant reporter at KTN which he delivered and was elevated to Swahili news anchor.

He also explained why he chose to become a Swahili journalist, stating that he feels more comfortable with Swahili than English.

“Throughout school, I got A’s in Swahili. Furthermore, I am more comfortable speaking Kiswahili than English. I had to study English because I was informed that if I wanted to find a job and survive in Nairobi, I needed to be able to speak it fluently,” he said.

Nimrod then switched from the Mombasa Road-based media firm to NTV. His career took off at NTV, when he became the face of the 7 PM newscast.

He also collaborated with Jane Ngoiri, forming a dynamic duo that proved popular among many.

Nimrod left NTV in 2018 to work for Citizen, where he is now a Swahili news anchor.
