The passage from Isaiah 43:18-19 encourages moving forward and embracing new beginnings. This message was central to a two-day induction workshop held for newly elected NCCK officials from Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia counties, and the Central Region. The workshop, at Bethany House, Sagana, aimed to educate leaders on NCCK’s history, constitution, governance structures, policies, and programs.
Kenya is at a pivotal moment in redefining its future, and every Kenyan has a role in shaping it. Thus, we share the following key messages:
- Listen to the People: Proverbs 15:22 emphasizes the importance of counsel for successful plans. Leaders must listen to the people, especially the youth, protesting to have their voices heard. It’s crucial to integrate the youth into governance and decision-making processes.
- No Further Bloodshed: Youth have exercised their right to peaceful protest over the past weeks. The government must stop using excessive force to disperse demonstrators and unconditionally release those arrested. The Inspector General should account for those abducted by security agents. The police should protect, not harm, peaceful protesters.
- Honor the Heroes: We extend condolences to families of those who lost their lives to police brutality and pray for the injured. We will honor their sacrifice with memorial services on Sunday, July 7, 2024, and invite all Kenyans to join in commemorating these heroes and freedom fighters.
- Dignified Livelihoods for All: With 79% of Kenya’s population under 35, it’s vital to focus on youth empowerment through education, life skills, and employment. We urge leaders to dedicate resources to youth initiatives. NCCK will support youth-led programs and increase budgets for youth departments.
- Transform Agricultural Economy: County governments must inspire agricultural industrialization and value addition. This includes training farmers, deploying agronomists, encouraging youth participation in agriculture, and reducing taxes on agricultural inputs and products.
- Reconstitute the IEBC: President William Ruto and stakeholders must complete the appointment of IEBC commissioners to uphold constitutional democracy and justice, ensuring by-elections are held promptly.
In conclusion, we commend all Kenyans, especially the youth, for their peaceful efforts in reshaping the nation. Guided by our National Anthem, may God bless the NCCK Central Region and the entire nation.
