The NCCK and the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that is aimed at enhancing climate change resilience and food security in the North Rift region by unlocking climate finance.
This was agreed during a meeting held between His Excellency Stephen Sang, Governor of Nandi County and chairman of NOREB, and a team from the National Council of Churches of Kenya led by Bishop Emmanuel Chemengich, Chairman of NCCK North Rift Region. The meeting affirmed the commitment by both NCCK and NOREB to continue working together for the benefit of the citizens.
The engagements under the MOU will progress the achievements made under the Kerio River Ecosystem Inter County Cooperation Agreement signed in 2019 by Baringo, Elgeyo Marakewet, West Pokot and Turkana Counties under the coordination of NCCK and NOREB. Under the Cooperation
Agreement, the counties committed to allocate at least 2% of their development budget to climate change interventions, a provision that was adopted by the other NOREB counties including Nandi.
Drafting of the Memorandum of Understanding will finalized within the next two weeks, after which a multi-stakeholder forum will be held to review the proposal and commence its implementation.
“It is the right time for us to do this. We must hit the road running and jumpstart the process to unlock the funds,” said Governor Sang, referring to the proposed joint actions under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) initiative.
“We need to partner to build the resilience of our people to end their suffering due to uncontrolled climate change”, said Bishop Chemengich, who was accompanied by the NCCK Programmes Director Phyllis Kamau-Kiarie and North Rift Regional Manager Grace Rugut.
The NCCK and NOREB remain fully committed to working together to secure sustainable climate change interventions in the North Rift region.
