Crown Bus Service, a prominent long-distance passenger and parcel transportation company in Kenya on Tuesday found itself embroiled in controversy after being linked to the terrorist organization al-Shabaab by the US’ Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Founded in 2004 and commencing operations in August 2006, Crown Bus Service quickly gained recognition for its professionalism and reliability.
Starting with the Nairobi-Mombasa route, the company expanded its services to cover over 20 routes in Kenya and Uganda, catering to the needs of passengers and businesses alike.
According to the Daily Nation, Crown Bus is owned by Mr Mohamed Jumale Ali Awali. He is accused of supporting al-Shabaab logistical operations.
OFAC named Kenya-based Faysal Yusuf Dini (Dini), working closely with Mohamed Jumale Ali Awale (Awale), as an al-Shabaab financial facilitator leveraging Haleel Group and some of its leadership to transfer funds on behalf of al-Shabaab.
“Kenya-based Faysal Yusuf Dini (Dini) is an Al-Shabaab financial facilitator who leverages Haleel Group and some of its leadership to transfer funds on behalf of al-Shabaab.
“He also works closely with Kenya-based Mohamed Jumale Ali Awale (Awale) to plan investment projects and money laundering activities. This includes managing al-Shabaab funds laundered through investment projects and companies, including through Kenya-based Crown Bus Services. Crown Bus Services has also supported Al-Shabaab’s logistical operations,” OFAC said.
Office
Crown Bus head office is located in Lagos House, along Monrovia Street, Nairobi.
