May Maloba: Kenyan Medic Behind Software Revolutionising HIV Tracking in Infants in the US

May Maloba is a Doctor of Philosophy student at the University of Kansas (KU).

She is credited for directing the construction of the HIV Infant Tracking System (HITS), which is software that allows clinicians to receive test results quickly.

According to a statement from the US-based institution of higher learning, the technology assisted doctors in administering treatment to newborns born with the virus.

Maloba was credited with directing the effective deployment of the innovative technology, despite the fact that she did not create it.

Notably, the technology was utilized to treat Kenyans during the global pandemic of 2020.

“We have the lab, the provider, and the mum. So, now there’s no blame game because we will know where the gap is, and if the result is out and the provider has not released it, we will know where to get that,” she stated.

Maloba’s creativity in US healthcare has earned her recognition for her interpersonal skills and professionalism from technological entrepreneurs.

Despite her success in the United States, she established a name for herself in Kenya through her different research projects that benefited Kenyan patients.

Maloba is well known for her activism for cervical cancer screening, which has resulted in a large number of women being screened.

“My approach was to work with them with a target of screening only two women a day. I was excited because the more they screened, the more they realized the benefit of screening,” she said.

Maloba’s success in the medical industry has been attributed to her extensive experience and educational background, having earned a Masters degree from Great Lakes University in Kisumu County.

Her other accolades include clinical research and study coordination from the University of Birmingham, as well as a pre-cancer screening certificate from the University of California, San Francisco.
