Kenya hosts regional forum on the international year of camelids and sustainable livestock transformation in Africa

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), hosted a Regional Forum on the International Year of Camelids and Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Africa from June 10 to 12, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya.

This forum gathered policymakers, researchers, development partners, and livestock stakeholders to highlight the crucial role that sustainable livestock systems and dromedary camels play in enhancing food security, nutrition, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability throughout Africa.

With the theme “Sustainable livestock systems; food security; improved livelihoods; and One Health,” the discussions will aim to strengthen national and regional policies, share best practices, and align efforts with the Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation. Special focus was given to the challenges faced by camel-keeping communities, such as limited access to veterinary services, water shortages, and underdeveloped markets.

An exhibition accompanying the forum to celebrate the International Year of Camelids, showcasing innovations, traditional knowledge, and cultural heritage from camel-herding communities across the continent. This was a great opportunity to encourage investment, promote inclusive economic growth, and emphasize the role of camels in adapting to climate change.

Building on the outcomes of the 2023 Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, the forum aims to spark regional action to end hunger, reduce poverty, and support climate-resilient livelihoods through improved livestock systems in Africa.
