King’ori Wambaki: Kenyan Cashing in From Selling Muratina in the UK

A Kenyan man is making money in the UK by brewing and selling Muratina, a locally manufactured alcoholic drink.

The beer is mostly banned in Kenya, but King’ori Wambaki’s Kikuyu traditional drink has helped him become a household brand in Cheshunt, UK.

Wambaki has spent almost 27 years in England, transitioning from studies to working for foreigners and launching his own business.

He labels the drink, Muratelia, as wine flavored with honey – it contains 12% alcohol and is sold to people under the age of 35.

Muratelia is priced between £10 (Ksh 1,636) and £25 (Ksh 4,090), depending on where it is sold: counters, retail outlets, or restaurants.

“Cheshunt is located outside London. We used ingredients that are available here in the UK as we have not yet reached a point where we can import products from Kenya. The business provides income better than what I can earn while being employed,” Wambaki stated.

He claimed that he conducted extensive study and developed business plans for marketing his goods.

It has also been used in the modeling and fashion industries, with branded bags and clothing.

He supplies his product to three restaurants and four retailers in the United Kingdom.

What worked for him was that he had no competition because the drink was new to the UK market.

According to his LinkedIn profile, the economist has a Master of Science in Finance and Management and a Bachelor of Science in Economics.
