Rael Muthoni Njeru, a 26-year-old Kenyan woman currently living in Nigeria, is facing a dire situation after her Nigerian husband abandoned her and their child without a trace.
Stranded and vulnerable, she is now pleading for assistance to return home to her parents in Kenya.
Muthoni shares that she is now facing threats from her husband’s family, who are demanding custody of her child.
“His family said that if I do not provide my child for them within three weeks, they will take their daughter,” Njeru tearfully revealed.
Compounding her difficulties is the looming threat of eviction due to overdue rent payments.
With no means of income and no support system in Nigeria, Muthoni finds herself in a precarious position with nowhere to turn.
“I am considering seeking refuge at the Kenyan embassy in Lagos, although it’s a 12-hour drive from where I am currently staying,” she expressed.
Met and married in Nairobi, Muthoni and her estranged husband have been married for nearly four years, their relationship starting in 2018.
They dated for a year before tying the knot in 2020, after which Muthoni relocated to Nigeria with him in June 2021.
“I just want to return to Kenya and take care of my children in peace,” Muthoni stated.
Besides her two-year-old daughter with her current husband, she is also a mother to an eight-year-old girl from a previous relationship.
Unfortunately, Muthoni’s parents are unable to provide assistance. Her passport is missing, and she lacks the means to secure transportation back home for herself and her children.
Despite reaching out to her family, financial constraints prevent them from helping. Additionally, her mother, nursing an injury sustained from a cow in December 2023, is unable to work.
