The players and officials of National Super League side Gusii Football Club were reported to be stranded in Mombasa without food after losing two matches.
The team arrived at Mbaraki in Mombasa county last weekend and suffered a defeat to Coastal Heroes and Mombasa Elite.
Sports journalist Fred Arocho shared the news of their plight on social media on Thursday evening.
“Gusii Football Club players and officials are currently helpless at Mbaraki, Mombasa grounds having no fuel back to Kisii. It’s a pity that the team hasn’t eaten since morning and are staring at harsh reality of spending their nights out in the cold,” he said.
According to Arocho, the team had no fuel to return to Kisii, and they hadn’t eaten since morning. They were staring at the harsh reality of spending the night in the cold.
The post caught the attention of Gusii political leaders, with Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi and South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro contributing Sh10,000 each to assist the stranded players and club officials.
Later on, Arocho gave an update stating that more people had made contributions to help the team.
