A section of Gor Mahia fans has voiced their discontent and given coach Johnathan McKinstry an ultimatum following the team’s recent 2-1 defeat to AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Duel.
This loss marked the first time in seven years that Leopards emerged victorious over their archrivals in a league match, intensifying the fans’ frustration.
Taking to social media, the disgruntled fans expressed their anger and disappointment, primarily directing their ire towards McKinstry’s tactics, which they believed led to the team’s defeat.
“It is better to lose even the league and not be beaten by Kisiagi FC (AFC Leopards). If we can’t win the league and having lost to AFC Leopards, then there is no reason for this coach to stay next season,” said Dan Otieno as quoted by a local daily.
Gor Mahia finds themselves facing a challenging task in their pursuit of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League title. They currently sit in second place with 63 points, trailing Tusker by a single point.
Their upcoming fixture against Tusker on May 28 holds immense importance, as it represents a make-or-break moment in their quest for the league title. Securing a victory in that match is their only viable path to claiming the championship.
Tusker, on the other hand, appears to have a relatively easier schedule with matches against relegation-threatened teams such as Wazito, Posta Rangers, and Vihiga Bullets following their clash with Gor Mahia.
In contrast, Gor Mahia faces a more demanding set of fixtures. They will need to secure victories against Tusker, Ulinzi Stars, Kakamega Homeboyz, and Nairobi City Stars to maintain their title aspirations.
Of particular significance is the upcoming match against Homeboyz, as Gor Mahia suffered a defeat to them in the Mozartt Bet Cup quarter-finals just last month. Failing to capture the league title would prolong Gor Mahia’s drought to three years, which is deemed unacceptable by their passionate fanbase.
