Kenyan Families Cashing in From Selling Goat Meat to Jamaicans, Nigerians in the US

Bernard Wambugu’s and Peter Ngugi’s families banded together in 2022 to purchase a 2.5-acre plot of land in Atlanta, Georgia, to raise goats and sell them.

Githinji added that when his wife visited a US national, she saw a goat and wanted to purchase it. They ended up butchering for a family feast.

After Githinji’s wife purchased a goat multiple times, they decided to form a partnership with their friends to purchase a plot of land to raise and sell goats.

“My wife visited a US family and saw goats which was a new thing because we had never seen goats around. So she bought one when we had guests and we slaughtered it,” Githinji said.

His wife began butchering the goats in order to sell the meat to people in the region, who preferred it because it was fresher than what was available in supermarkets.

When they discovered a plot of land, they contacted their pals, the Ngugis, and purchased it as a group.

“After a while, my wife used to buy the goat, slaughter it and sell the meat to other people. So we got inspired and started rearing the goats,” Githinji said.

The family noted that the goats are hardy and live on farm grass, making it easy to run the business.

“It is easy to maintain the goats because they eat grass from the farm. All we have to do is give them water and milk sometimes

“I have also taught my daughter how to take care of them. They also do not get sick easily,” Mary Ngungi stated.

The family hope to build the enterprise to become the most significant source of organic meat for Kenyans in Georgia and other clients.
