Today, Kenya steps into the global spotlight for World MSME Day 2025. It’s more than just numbers and policies—it’s about the heart and soul of the nation. It’s about the countless Kenyans who rise each morning to run their kiosks, zip around on boda bodas, sell products online, or provide vital services in bustling markets, towns, and villages. These micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are truly the backbone of Kenya’s economy.
The World Bank highlights that MSMEs make up a staggering 90% of all businesses worldwide and account for over 60% of jobs. In Kenya, they contribute nearly 40% to the GDP and employ millions, particularly among the youth and women in both rural and peri-urban areas. Their relentless drive keeps communities thriving, families nourished, and aspirations alive.
For Safaricom, MSMEs are more than just clients—they’re collaborators in crafting a digitally inclusive economy. “At Safaricom Business, we recognize that behind every business is an individual filled with ambition, resilience, and a story that deserves our support,” shared Frankline Okata, Tribe Lead for Packaged Solutions, during a recent chat with TechTrends Media.
Safaricom unveils emerald platform: A premium customer experience
To empower MSMEs, Safaricom has rolled out tools designed to meet their everyday challenges—from M-PESA for Business services like Business Till and Pochi la Biashara, to credit solutions such as Fuliza ya Biashara and Taasi Pochi. These resources enable businesses to manage cash flow, handle payments, and establish credit histories—all from the convenience of a mobile phone.
But it doesn’t stop at financial tools. Safaricom’s Grow with Safaricom Business initiative, launched in 2024, has already reached thousands of MSMEs through interactive workshops that provide training in digitization, marketing, compliance, and networking. It’s not just about tech support—it’s about building capacity.
Safaricom is also looking ahead, investing in the future of MSMEs by expanding 5G access, incorporating AI into business tools, and exploring innovations like cross-border payments and cloud solutions. These advancements are crucial as more Kenyan entrepreneurs dive into e-commerce, fintech, and agritech platforms.
As we come together to celebrate MSME Day, Okata expressed a heartfelt message: “We’re on this journey with you. Your ambition fuels our passion, and your progress is what drives us.”
Across every county and every street, MSMEs are the backbone of Kenya, creating change one transaction, one innovation, and one customer at a time. Safaricom takes pride in being a part of that journey.
