Former Harambee Stars legend reveals why Michael Olunga can’t play in any European league

In a past interview, Former Harambee Stars striker Dennis Oliech revealed that Michael Olunga, the free-scoring Kenyan international, will never play for a top European football team after he left Girona FC for less competitive leagues.

Speaking in a candid interview with Jalango TV, the all-time record goalscorer for the national team with 34 goals, stated that it was near impossible for Olunga, who currently plies his trade in Qatari club Al Duhail, to attract suitors from any European club.

Oliech likened his situation to Olunga’s, saying that his move from AC Ajaccio to UAE club Dubai CSC marked the end of his career.

He said that the leagues in Asia and the Middle East are considered to be of lower quality than the competitions in Europe.

The veteran footballer regret exiting Europe and, given another chance, would not make the same mistake.

Oliech went on to play down the goals scored by Olunga, saying that he cannot replicate the same form in competitive leagues in Europe. Olunga was the top scorer in the 2020 Japanese J1 League with 28 goals, earning the Golden Boot and the J-League 2020 MVP. His fine form has continued in his orevious club, Kashiwa Reysol, where he has  scored more than 14 goals.

Olunga recently clinched the 2022/23 Qatar Stars League title with Al Duhail and the season’s Golden Boot wit 22 goals.

It was the first time that the former Gor Mahia man lifted the Qatar Stars League trophy after moving to Qatar in January 2021. He won this season’s Qatar Cup and Amir Cup (Ooredoo Cup).
