Esther Njoroge: Entrepreneur Who Established Bountiful Safaris After Being Fired From Bonfire Adventures

Esther Njoroge is the second child in a family of four.

She spent her formative years in Bogita, Thika, before her family moved to Nyahururu in Nyandarua County.

After completing her secondary education, Njoroge enrolled at the University of Nairobi (UoN) to study social sciences.

She subsequently secured an internship with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), where she engaged in community service activities.

Njoroge later obtained a position as a travel consultant, initially earning Ksh 6,000 per month, which was later increased to Ksh 10,000.

She was introduced to a web developer who assisted her in launching a website named Boutiful Safaris, where she promoted tours and travel services.

In 2009, she joined Bonfire Adventures, earning Ksh 15,000 per month, excluding commissions.

“In addition to the monthly salary, the top three performers received a 10 percent commission,” Njoroge stated.

Although it was a new role, she quickly adapted to the environment and began earning substantial commissions.

“I was generating impressive commissions; at times, I earned up to Ksh 100,000 monthly in commissions,” she noted.

In an interview with Lynn Ngugi, Njoroge discussed how the work atmosphere gradually became toxic.

“I often hesitate to discuss it, but ultimately, I believe the experience transformed my life; I learned valuable lessons. It was challenging, and I would not wish anyone to endure what I went through, as it deeply affected me, leading to my decision to leave employment,” she remarked.

Njoroge recounted an incident where she and her colleagues were belittled and told to leave the company to open a brothel.

“That comment struck me hard; it was damaging, and I thought, ‘if I were inclined to do that, I would have pursued it in my youth.’ We all have our struggles, but there are certain things you should never say to those who have dedicated their efforts to your organization,” she expressed.

Following this humiliating experience, she resolved never to return to traditional employment.
