Eric Kimani: Milk Hawker Who Grew to Establish Fully-fledged Processing Plant

Eric Kimani possesses an impressive professional background.

He previously held the positions of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) at Sameer Group, a prominent tyre manufacturing firm in the East African region.

Kimani’s extensive experience includes serving as a non-executive director for several organizations, such as I&M Bank Limited and Kibo Fund, where he also chaired the audit committee as well as the Risk, Credit, Remuneration and Nominations, Audit, and Procurement committee.

Additionally, he was the Managing Director (MD) of the Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA) and held the role of Finance Director at both Dormans Coffee and Williamson Tea.

Kimani’s career further encompasses roles in various private and public entities, including Sasini Tea and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers.

He has also served as the chairman of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and led the board of Trustees for HelpAge International.

Furthermore, he was a past District Governor of Rotary District 9200, which includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Eritrea.

Despite his successful career, Kimani recognized the need to pursue a profitable venture outside of traditional employment.

He identified a gap in Kenya’s dairy sector, which was primarily dominated by Kenya Co-operative Creameries (KCC), struggling to meet market demands.

At that time, he was serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sameer Group and resided with his family in Githunguri, Ruiru constituency.

Alongside his wife Margaret, they embarked on a venture to raise cows, quickly leading to the production of milk.

Due to their daily commute from Ruiru to Nairobi for work, they transported milk in the back of their car to sell to clients in Nairobi.

They engaged in this milk distribution for nearly three years, and in 1996, the couple founded Palmhouse Dairies, a micro dairy processing enterprise.

While managing the dairy business, Eric maintained his position at Sameer Group until his retirement in 2012 at the age of 40.

Over the years, the company, which operates its processing facility in Ruiru, has evolved into one of the foremost milk distribution firms in the nation.

It produces more than 10,000 liters of milk daily, primarily supplying institutions and corporate clients. For the past twenty-five years, the company has been a supplier to Nairobi Hospital.

Other notable clients include Windsor Golf and Country Club, Java House, Nairobi Serena Hotel, and Muthaiga Country Club.

Additionally, the company offers value-added products such as yogurts and mala, which are distributed to various retail supermarkets.
