Controversial gospel singer Chris Embarambamba has recently found himself at odds with the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) over the ban of his music, particularly his song “Niko Uchi.”
The singer, known for his unconventional and often daring performances, has challenged the decision, citing discrimination and hostility from the regulatory body.
In a letter directed to the KFCB, Embarambamba sought a reconsideration of their ban on his music and questioned the exorbitant fine of Ksh.6.4 million imposed on him.
He argued that the ban and fine were unjust, especially considering that other musicians use similarly expressive language in their works without facing similar repercussions.
“While there are numerous musicians using different combinations of words as an expression of their creativity in different contexts e.g Mali safi chito, it is not apparent why you have opted to single out and only call out our client for his use of the word ‘Niko Uchi’,” reads the letter.
Embarambamba’s legal representative, lawyer Danstan Omari, emphasized the singer’s role as a minister of God and the higher purpose behind his creative endeavors – to spread the Gospel and touch souls.
Omari highlighted that “Niko Uchi,” the controversial song in question, was crafted specifically to reach the deaf community, using visual elements to convey its message effectively.
The letter expressed shock and dismay at the KFCB’s response, suggesting that instead of celebrating Embarambamba’s creativity and unique approach to ministry, the board had chosen to stifle and intimidate him with unwarranted demands.
It is thus shocking and bewildering that instead of celebrating our clients’ creativity and genius ideas of ministry, you have resolved to discourage and intimidate him by making very scandalous and unmerited demands,” the letter continues.
