CF Montreal suffered a devastating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS match held on Saturday night.
Victor Wanyama, the Kenyan midfielder who played as a center-forward, lasted only 55 minutes on the field and failed to make a significant impact in the match.
Montreal has been struggling to find their form lately, having won only once in their last five fixtures. The team was hoping to turn their fortunes around against Vancouver but faced a dominant side that outshot them 29-3 and had a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Simon Becher was the star of the match, scoring two goals and adding an assist for Vancouver. He was given a start after becoming the first Whitecap to sub in and score in his first two appearances in the previous two matches.
Brian White opened the scoring for Vancouver in the 38th minute, with assists from Becher and Javain Brown. Becher scored his first goal in the 43rd minute, with passes from Ali Ahmed and Luis Martins, and Julian Gressel found the net unassisted two minutes later to give Vancouver a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Vancouver scored their fourth goal just three minutes into the second half, with an unassisted score by Ahmed.
Becher found the net for a second time in the 59th minute, with assists from Brown and Pedro Vite, to cap off the scoring.
Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois saved four shots, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the crushing defeat.
Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka did not have to make a single save to earn the clean sheet for his team.
With this loss, Montreal drops to a 1-4-0 record in the season, while Vancouver improves to 1-2-3.
Montreal will be hoping to bounce back in their next match against the New England Revolution, while Vancouver will host the Portland Timbers.
