Boniface Waniiku: Kenyan Who Worked as a Taxi Driver Now Serving in the US Army

Boniface Waniiku, born and raised in Nakuru County, is one of several Kenyans serving in the United States Army.

Waniiku worked as a cab driver in Kenya, but it didn’t pay enough, so he started working on moving to the United States.

Fortunately, Waniiku received a green card through the programme and moved to a faraway country in search of a better future.

“When I lived in Kenya, I was working in the taxi business. One day, I was hijacked and the car was stolen. I did not want that anymore, so I applied for a green card,” he explained.

Following his arrival in the US, Waniiku joined the army, and currently works as a wheeled vehicle mechanic with 1-14 Cavalry Warhorse under the Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

“I am the first person in my family to come to the United States. When I came to the US, I promised myself, I would not go back. I have to prove to myself that even outside of Kenya, we can make it. After all that, I’m still doing my best every day,” Waniiku stated.

In an interview, Waniiku explained that he loves the experience of serving in the US Army, and enjoys the company of his colleagues.

“There have been so many moments since I’ve been with 1-14 CAV where we joined together as a group, being a part of one community, one team, one family. This sticks with me. We are 1-14,” he said.

The Stryker Brigade Combat Team is a combat force that offers division, corps, and joint task force commanders a distinct capacity throughout the spectrum of battle.

During continuous operations, soldiers under this wing must think faster, make better decisions, and act faster than the opponent.

SBCT conducts operations against conventional or unconventional enemy troops in various terrains, climates, and combat zones.

Furthermore, the squad can perform all phases of military operations, including offensive, defensive, stability and support, however some missions may necessitate additional assistance.
